Cytological investigation sometimes makes it possible to establish tumor progression or recurrence even before the appearance of the first clinical symptoms. An increase in the expression of radiation changes with further absence of tumor elements during a follow-up should be regarded as a prognostically favorable factor of the effectiveness of radiation therapy.

Altogether 70 patients with histologically verified laryngeal cancer were studied. An analysis of the data obtained showed that tumor proliferative activity expressed by a labeling index (LI) correlated, to a certain extent, with various structural and functional properties of a tumor, e. g. LI showed correlation with a degree of differentiation of squamous cell carcinoma: in a nonkeratinizing type the mean LI was 8.2, in a keratinizing type 5.5. A noticeable immune response to a tumor was observed in most of the patients. However a stable tendency (p = 0.95) to a decrease in LI in marked lymphoid infiltration was revealed in nonkeratinizing squamous cell carcinoma only. There was no correlation between LI and a degree of vascularization. The preponderance of weak vascularization was noted in keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma. A decrease in LI in weak vascularization was also observed in this cancer type taking into account a degree of lymphoid infiltration. In clinical practice while designing a therapy one should bear in mind a variety of clinical, structural and biological features of a tumor.

A study was made of the time course of the level of metronidazole in the blood and tissues of 97 patients with localized osteogenic sarcoma in several modes of the drug administration (per os, using an enema and their combinations). The maximum drug concentration in the blood was achieved with the combined mode of the drug administration at a dose of 8 g/m2, enhancing local and general effects on a tumor, manifesting themselves in the reduction of sizes of a tumor, its morphological changes and an increase in the average period of metastasis detection. The 3-year survival rates showed no significant differences between groups of patients receiving and not receiving metronidazole.

The paper is concerned with the results of a morphological study following chemoradiotherapy in 25 patients with Ewing's sarcoma and 14 patients with reticulum cell sarcoma. The signs of therapeutic pathomorphosis were observed in the first 3 days, and substitution of the connective tissue for a necrotized tumor started by the 3rd-4th week after the initiation of therapy. In some cases tumor growth and recurrences at the site of a treated tumor were observed.

A comparative study of therapeutic pathomorphosis of bone tumors has shown that radiosensitive and radioresistant tumors differ in the time-course and nature of radiation-induced pathomorphosis. In radiosensitive tumors, the resultant changes arise earlier, are more strongly marked, and, as a rule, necrosis of the tumor with its replacement with fibrous tissue is observed. In radioresistant tumors, signs of radiation pathomorphosis appear later, "therapeutic giants" are typically seen to appear, and the direction in which tumor cell differentiate may change.

The creation of a classification is a first need for the improvement of the cytological diagnosis. The cytologic classification of bone tumours is worked out on the basis of the International Histological Classification. The possibilities and limitations of the cytologic method are taken into consideration. A brief description of all nosological entities mentioned in the classification is given.

The results of clinical and roentgen-morphological studies on 17 cases of multipotent primary sarcoma of the bone are presented. The difficulties of the tumor recognition are due to the fact that it occurs rarely, has no specific clinical-roentgenological picture and shows marked tissue polymorphism. Most frequent are differentiations of the type of osteogenic sarcoma, chondrosarcoma, reticulosarcoma with simultaneous combination with areas having the structure of Ewing's tumor, or extensive fields of undifferentiated primitive tumor cells. Further studies are necessary to decide whether or not this tumor is an independent form among other known skeletal neoplasias.

Excerpts from case histories and the results of morphological examinations of organs and tissues of a man of 17 with Letterer-Siwe disease and a man of 26 with Gaucher's disease are presented. Noteworthy is the fact of morphological similarity of eosinophilic granulema and Letterer-Siwe disease and transition of the former into the latter.
